Western Appalachians Geological and Geophysical Study

Summary

This study is a valuable Prospect Generation Tool focusing on the hydrothermal dolomites and the petroleum system of the Trenton - Black River Trend in the Appalachian Basin. The integrated geological and geophysical ArcGIS study identifies -

  • Key exploration elements
  • Conceptual model
  • Petroleum system evolution
  • Key play concepts
  • An exploration strategy
  • Recommended areas for exploration

Data

  • Gravity: USGS NGS99 data set, re-processed by GETECH
  • Magnetic: Regional USGS (NURE) and high resolution (TVA/USGS) data sets, levelled and merged by GETECH
  • Topographic: GTOPO30
  • Public domain well log data
  • Seismic examples
  • Stratigraphic cross-sections
  • Various geologic map elements

Scope of the study

All the gravity and magnetic datasets were reprocessed by GETECH and various key enhancements and derivatives generated. These images together with public domain seismic, well log and stratigraphic data were analysed in an ArcGIS environment to identify new areas of exploration within the known hydrothermal dolomite petroleum system trend.

Regional Volume:
  • Gravity and Magnetic data enhancements
  • Present tectonic setting
  • Field Analogs
  • Structural history
  • Traps, Reservoirs, Seals
  • Source rocks and Migration
  • Basement terranes

Basin Volumes:
  • Gravity and Magnetic data enhancements
  • Structural and stratigraphic elements
  • Geochemical controls
  • Hydrocarbon generation
  • Kitchen and trap environments
  • Reservoir evaluation
  • Trend analysis of surface lineaments
  • Seismic examples
  • Sweet spot interpretation

Products

The study comprises:

  • Volume 1 - New York, West Virginia and Pennsylvania
  • Volume 2 - Ohio

Both Volumes are supplied as a hard copy and pdf report, and a digital ArcGIS project containing georeferenced images of the gravity and magnetic data, supporting geological data and interpretation.
