Global Topography and Bathymetry Data

GETECH In 2005 GETECH completed a major study to generate a global continental margin bathymetry dataset at a grid cell size of 2km. The primary source of information was the Centenary Edition of the GEBCO Digital Atlas (GDA) released as a 1 minute grid. This grid is based on digitised hand-drafted contours at 200 m, and in deeper water, 500 m intervals, from the hardcopy 5th edition released incrementally as a 1:10,000,000 scale atlas between 1975 and 1982.

GEBCO Digital Atlas Map

The figure above shows those areas of the world where specific datasets were used instead of the GEBCO dataset. For further information contact GETECH.

The GEBCO grid is of variable quality, as a consequence of the historical background, vintages, and data availability. Problems such as gridding overshoots, terracing and processing sub-region boundary busts were reduced or removed by alternative data sources or grid manipulation.

Alternative sources of data were patched into the GEBCO dataset where it was believed they improved the quality of the final grid. These included re-processed bathymetry profile data, digital contours, digitised nautical charts and point soundings.

SRTM

SRTM Topography Data

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) of 2000 obtained elevation data on a near-global scale to generate the most complete high-resolution digital onshore topographic database of Earth. Good image example of the data needed.

Deliverables

We have compiled and re-formatted the entire dataset SRTM 3 second data into a Geosoft .grd format and can supply this for specific or country-wide areas.
